ENGELS TO AUGUST BEBEL AND PAUL SINGER
IN BERLIN
London, 14 November 1894
To August Bebel & Paul Singer
The thousand pounds I have bequeathed to you for 'electoral purposes'[1] —from which death duty will be deducted—had to be bequeathed in this form because I could not bequeath the money to the party in any other form if it was to be regarded as a legally valid legacy in this country. That was the only reason for the above proviso. So first of all make sure that you get the money and, when you have got it, that it does not fall into the hands of the Prussians. And while passing a resolution on these points mind you drink a bottle of good wine; do this is memory of me.
