Letter to Paul Lafargue, April 11, 1887

ENGELS TO PAUL LAFARGUE[1]

IN PARIS

London, 11 April 1887
122 Regent's Park Road. N. W.

My dear Lafargue,

You ask me, as the person charged with the execution of Karl Marx's last wishes in regard to his works, to give you formal authorisation to negotiate the publication of a new edition of Misere de la philosophie and his other works written in French.[2] Although this seems hardly necessary as between you and me, it goes without saying that I grant this with pleasure.

Yours ever,

F. Engels

  1. This letter was first published in English in Frederick Engels, Paul and Laura Lafargue. Correspondence. 1887-1890, Vol. 2, Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1960.
  2. This refers to Marx's Misere de la philosophic. In 1884 Laura Lafargue failed to reach an agreement on a second French edition of the book. In 1887 Paul Lafargue again conducted negotiations on the matter. However, it was not until 1896, after Engels's death, that the project materialised (in Paris).
