Letter to Edward Spencer Beesly, October 19, 1871

MARX TO EDWARD SPENCER BEESLY

IN LONDON

[London, 19 October 1871]

My dear Sir,

Enclosed the photograph for Mrs Beesly. The Christian name of the illustrious Greenwood is Frederick.[1] This is not Frederick the Great. You know that Voltaire, in his Swiss retreat, had a Jesuit companion by the name of Adam, whom he used to introduce to his visitors by saying: This is not the first among men! Jenny[2] will give herself the pleasure to call on Mrs Beesly on Wednesday next[3] about 1 o'clock.

Yours most sincerely,

Karl Marx
