Letter to Friedrich Engels, July 2, 1868

MARX TO ENGELS

IN MANCHESTER

London, 2 July 1868

DEAR FRED,

D'abord[1] best thanks for the article.[2]

And secondly for the 2 5-pound halves. At the same time, I received a dunning letter from the LANDLORD, whom tomorrow (on arrival of the second halves) I shall first pay the remainder for the quarter which ended on March 25th.

Enclosed a letter from Eichhoff.[3] Meissner should have sent me the scrawl from Faucher.[4] It is a good thing that the fellows are beginning to give vent to their annoyance.

The children are progressing well. Naturally very weak. Tussychen also still has a little suppuration in the throat. The doctor is on the whole very satisfied. He will only know in a few days when they will be well enough to go out.

Yesterday, when buying a pencil, I found upon it Russian letters in golden script. PyccKiö rpa<J>H"n>.[5] But behind the Russian there appears to be a German named Theodor Stal (Schtal), namely Teo4opt> UlTaATi. This is the first time that I found something like that in a small local shop here. Borkheim would smell treason behind this.

Best greetings to Lizzy and the little one.[6]

Your

K.M.

  2. A reference TO ENGELS' intention to write a review of Volume One of Marx's Capital for The Fortnightly Review to which Professor Beesly was a contributor, (see Marx's letter TO ENGELS of 8 January 1868, present edition, Vol. 42). While working on the review, Engels wrote out excerpts from Capital, which later made up a synopsis (see Note 26). The review was written around 20 May-1 June 1868, but rejected by the editorial board (see present edition, Vol. 20).
  3. In his letter of 29 June 1868 Eichhoff thanked Marx for the material for his pamphlet Die Internationale Arbeiterassociation. Ihre Gründung, Organisation, politisch-sociale Thätigkeit und Ausbreitung (see Note 79), and told him about an unsigned review of Volume One of Capital published by the Vierteljahrschrift für Volkswirtschaft und Kulturgeschichte (see Note 83).
  4. A reference to the review of Volume One of Capital in the magazine Vierteljahrschrift für Volkswirthschaft und Kulturgeschichte, of which Faucher was an editor (Bd. XX, Berlin, 1868, S. 206-19). It appeared under the heading 'Das Kapital. Kritik der politischen Oekonomie von Karl Marx. Erster Band. Buch I. Der Produktionsprozess des Kapitals. Hamburg, Otto Meissner, 1867'.
  5. Russian graphite. Marx gives these words and, further on, the name Theodor Schtal in Russian letters.
